About the Team
Competitions
UBHWRFC competes in the National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) Women’s Cup, the premier competition for women’s medical school rugby in the UK. In its inaugural 2022/23 season, Bristol went undefeated before lifting the trophy in front of a large crowd in London, a landmark achievement in the club’s history.
Since then, UBHWRFC has established itself as one of the top sides in the league, balancing competitive rugby with the inclusive, social spirit that defines the club. Fixtures throughout the year provide regular rugby for players of all abilities, whether you’ve been playing for years or are completely new to the sport.
Training and fixtures
We train once a week on Saturday mornings on the Downs (by the water tower) - a perfect way to start the weekend with rugby, fresh air, and a great group of teammates. Matches are usually held on weekends, giving students busy on outplacement the chance to return to Bristol and stay involved. Training is supported by player-coach Izzy (she plays for Bristol Bears - no we won't stop telling people) and Director of Rugby, Mike.
Our rugby is player-led and flexible, with a focus on heads-up rugby and individual flair rather than a rigid playbook. Whether you’re looking for competitive matches or just a fun run-around before a trip to the pub, UBHWRFC has a place for you.

Socials
UBHWRFC is proud to host a range of brilliant socials across the year. From post-training coffees and match-day pub trips to big nights out and joint events with UBHRFC, our calendar has something for everyone. Annual highlights include Varsity against Cardiff (a huge day for Bristol Medics sport), our biennial tour to Nantes, France, and our Alumni Dinner, where past and present members come together to celebrate the club.
We’re also committed to making our club as inclusive as possible. Our EDI officer organises sober socials, such as coffee catch-ups and group study sessions, ensuring everyone feels welcome in the team both on and off the pitch.
At UBHWRFC, rugby is about more than just matches. It’s about fun, friendship, and a community you can belong in.
